10:6 And if a peace-loving person ¹  is there, your peace will remain on him, but if not, it will return to you. ²

10:19 Look, I have given you authority to tread ³  on snakes and scorpions ⁴  and on the full force of the enemy, ⁵  and nothing will ⁶  hurt you.

Lukas 20:16

20:16 He will come and destroy ⁷  those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” ⁸  When the people ⁹  heard this, they said, “May this never happen!” ¹⁰ 

[10:6]  ¹ tn Grk “a son of peace,” a Hebrew idiom for a person of a certain class or kind, as specified by the following genitive construction (in this case, “of peace”). Such constructions are discussed further in L&N 9.4. Here the expression refers to someone who responds positively to the disciples’ message, like “wisdom’s child” in Luke 7:30.

[10:6]  ² sn The response to these messengers determines how God’s blessing is bestowed – if they are not welcomed with peace, their blessing will return to them. Jesus shows just how important their mission is by this remark.

[10:19]  ³ tn Or perhaps, “trample on” (which emphasizes the impact of the feet on the snakes). See L&N 15.226.

[10:19]  ⁴ sn Snakes and scorpions are examples of the hostility in the creation that is defeated by Jesus. The use of battle imagery shows who the kingdom fights against. See Acts 28:3-6.

[10:19]  ⁵ tn Or “I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and [authority] over the full force of the enemy.” The second prepositional phrase can be taken either as modifying the infinitive πατεῖν (patein, “to tread”) or the noun ἐξουσίαν (exousian, “power”). The former is to be preferred and has been represented in the translation.

[10:19]  sn The enemy is a reference to Satan (mentioned in v. 18).

[10:19]  ⁶ tn This is an emphatic double negative in the Greek text.

[20:16]  ⁷ sn The statement that the owner will come and destroy those tenants is a promise of judgment; see Luke 13:34-35; 19:41-44.

[20:16]  ⁸ sn The warning that the owner would give the vineyard to others suggests that the care of the promise and the nation’s hope would be passed to others. This eventually looks to Gentile inclusion; see Eph 2:11-22.

[20:16]  ⁹ tn Grk “they”; the referent (the people addressed in v. 9) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:16]  ¹⁰ sn May this never happen! Jesus’ audience got the point and did not want to consider a story where the nation would suffer judgment.
